The temporomandibular joint, or jaw pain, is often referred to as TMJ. Dysfunction in the jaw can be devastating, causing an array of symptoms and difficulties. If you suffer from TMJ pain, Chiropractor Dr George Prorellis wants to help you. He has seen many patients suffering from this condition.
TMJ discomfort typically sets in when you’re about middle-aged. That’s because, in our younger years, our joints have more cartilage, making them suppler. TMJ pain usually won’t occur until at least your 30s, though in some cases, it can be earlier.
If pain and dysfunction of the jaw muscles is adversely affecting your regular day-to-day activities, it may be time to come and see us.
TMJ pain doesn’t have a single origin. Instead, it can result from an array of causes, such as
An overbite can create a subluxation in the jaw joint, making it chronically lax, which leads to TMJ pain. If the teeth aren’t aligned, an improper bite can also result. People who play contact sports are at high risk of an impact that can affect the jaw, resulting in a misalignment that creates chronic pain. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, puts excessive tension on the jaw joint.
You may find that during times of stress or very busy periods your symptoms worsen. Awareness of stressful times can help you avoid the toll it can take on your jaw.
The following list may not include every symptom a TMJ patient may experience:
The first step is to have an assessment. Our chiropractor will evaluate the cause of your TMJ pain, which determines the most appropriate course of treatment for you. Then, your jaw joint will be put into the proper position, ensuring physiological alignment.
Any ligaments that are overstretched and surrounding nerves that may be compromised are addressed, which can also contribute to your pain.
Depending on your symptoms, our team will work closely with you to provide treatments and exercises to help improve the motion of your TMJ joint. This may in turn cause related symptoms such as ear pain, jaw locking, headaches, and neck pain to be reduced.
In some cases, our patients who have TMJ pain might require the care of another professional. If you need to see an orthodontist or dentist, we can refer you to one in our area. They will be able to perform any needed dental work or create a splint to treat your bruxism.
