Whiplash is an injury caused by the rapid forward and backward motion caused by trauma in a car accident. Typical symptoms are short term neck pain and loss of movement with later progressing to arm symptoms and upper back and scapula referral symptoms. The examination by a chiropractor is to see which tissue is responsible for the pain be it disc, ligament or muscle. Xrays or CT/MRI may also be ordered in order to see the exact nature and extent of injury in most cases. An assessment will also be done to look for mobility, spasticity and tension within the cervical (neck) joints. Initially treatment is aimed at reducing inflamation and after which mobility treatment and rehabilitation is introduced to restore movement and reduce pain.
